If those have been in the tank for several months, it has cycled. Take the water to the LFS and have it tested. Asuming everything's in range it cycled and his testing supplies may be defective.

He said near two months.. depends on how near.. but 6 weeks and 8 weeks does make a difference. I agree with trelane, possibly have an LFS test the water. With the rock and chromis it should have cycled.

It probably cycled without his knowledge the first couple weeks..... Tanks just don't cycle. it is impossible and improbable.

The only way that I can see this possibly happening is if your friend has changed the water daily since the tank has been set up. Could be that your friend is full of beans though :)

Well, it is possible. Improbable, as stated, but possible. My tank has, for example, never shown any levels of nitrites. Ever. Ammonia yes. Nitrates certainly. But no nitrites. I know they are being made and knew it when the cycle was commencing, because the nitrates were rising as well. So if that rock had enough bacteria to keep up with the chromis, then zero the levels would be. Pretty rare, but it does happen.
