Using natural beneficial bacteria to jump start and bypass a cycle isn't bypassing mother nature. But hey continue to sit and look at an empty tank for weeks/months when you set up a new tank.... whatever works for you :)

The skateboard tank was designed to be able to withstand the abuse it was designed for..... and if I remember correctly thicker then bulletproof glass so if it could stop a barrage of bullets a few 85lb emo kids on skateboards probably isn't that big of a deal in all reality. Yes it isn't the best environment, but no tank is really the best environment since they would really be best in the ocean anyway, but then our tanks would be empty and that would be wrong too :p

Who is to say they don't overstock for the show and then remove some afterwards? If they were really that big of idiots that didn't know what they were doing and couldn't keep fish alive do you really think they would have made it this far?

Its not finding nemo or tanked's fault that people didn't do research before buying a live animal. Its the LFS (which IMO have a low fault since afterall they are a retail business and retail businesses are designed to sell and make money, not properly educate people) that saw a great opportunity for sales, and parents who said... oh its just a fish no big deal.... because general society feels that way. Ask 100 elementary/middle school age kids parents (that don't have reefs lol) if they feel a fish is as much of a live animal as a dog/cat and I bet atleast half would say no because they cant interact with you, or require much care like a dog/cat or "real" pet would. You can just flush a fish when you get tired of it or it dies but you can't do that to a dog/cat because even if they would fit it would be considered animal cruelty, but if you do it with a fish no big deal you put an aquatic animal in water and sent it on its way...... and until society sees them as actual live animals/ pets and not just "fish" there will be a higher disregard for their life, and many will not care to do the research..... thankfully some LFS like my favorite one will refuse to sell to people that don't atleast want to put the money into getting an adequate setup for what they want/ buy there, they also recommend people to websites like this to become more educated.

I have wondered the same thing. It is just like they throw the fish in there for the final viewing. However, they did a episode for Rainforest Café. We have one here in Houston, and I have to admit...Their tanks are gorgeous with several specimans swimming about, and look healthy as can be, so who knows.

I watch the show. Mainly because I enjoy the builds and the fish. From my experience watching the show it isn't really reality. How many stunts are fabricated, how many "accidents" are really accidents and who could be a expert but do so many dumb things. We responsible Hobbyists learn from our mistakes and tend not to make them over and over. Do you really think these guys make the same mistakes over and over on accident? I don't. It's the entertainment factor. On the Cleopatra tank, do you really think they can set a piece of expensive privacy glass down and it stays, cut scene and all of a sudden it falls. Right! And who can be that dumb? (Not saying there aren't people out there)
All I'm trying to say is that this is only an hr episode, I don't think they do these tanks as fast as they make it seem like they do. They may take several days to install but tell us it happens in one day. Who knows. It is edited and scripted for entertainment and I don't agree with everything and most of us might not agree with it nor do we agree with each others choices all the time but guess what, it happens and it's on the individual.
I do think that all the tanks that they build are maintenanced by someone of a knowledgeable caliber.
I also think that the customer plays a bigger role in the decisions than they portray. I just recently built a fish tank fountain for a client and built it to their specifics, and they wanted certain things that I just didn't agree with but guess what? They were the ones with the money and I did what was requested. Luckily I was able to talk them out of an outside saltwater fish tank and turned it into a fw tank but my point is, is they had the money and made the decisions so the customer is the final decision maker.
This is just my points of views on this.

My wife and I love the show. If it was all about water chemistry the viewership would be nil, so they gloss over that. I've seen tank updates online and the tanks look great. No one is going to spend tens of thousands of dollars to have a failed tank.

Without being a hypocrite, I wouldn't be able to talk smack about this show and hold public state aquarium season passes in my pocket. Anyone who has issues with the Tanked stocking, should also be concerned with these other accepted family educational facilities, but it's funny I haven't seen any threads on them. And every single state aquarium I've been in, has had a tank I thought were inappropriately stocked and these places say they are educational. Tanked just states they are entertaining, so who should these thread be about really?

If we should stop watching because we think it's bad and inhumane fish advice, then we need to boycott half the LFSs we frequent.

I love seeing their initial designs, how they figure out to make it work and then how they get it in there. They have had some GREAT ideas and you're missing out if you can't see past the other stuff. It's a reality T.V show and about half of it is as real as the WWF. People must understand by now that reality shows aren't true to life. You must stop expecting them to be.

We have to realize that ATM is a business. In our capitalistic society, if they didn't do a good job they wouldn't still be in business. I personally don't believe that they dump all of those fish in their tanks, the day they set them up. Have you noticed how clear the water is when they are adding fish? Anyone who has set up a tank, with sand, knows it is usually 48 hours or so before the water is very clear. I believe they give all of these deadlines for drama's sake but I think they actually wait to put the fish in.

I think it's a pretty good show. They build some really cool looking tanks. I don't care much about how they stock tanks or equipment used. But seeing them go to the fish warehouse is cool. It is just a tv show & probably scripted to an extent.

I honestly do enjoy the show. But the major problem I see with it is this: for the uneducated it gives a false sense of knowledge. You see the fish they put together, the amount of fish they put in a tank, the lack of necessary filtration, all these unrealistic builds, and then they go and try and copy that. So while yes you can say it draws attention to the hobby, is it really going to help when the normal person goes out And loads up a tank, then a week later everything is dead? I doubt it.
