    Hola ppl,
I was reading about the thread on someone who had to leave the hobby....among the reasons was to be able to spend more time with the family. It's great as nothing should come between you and the family.
It made me realize how lucky i am. The marine aquarium is actually a family affair for me. The whole gang would sit endless hours in front of the tank enjoying it. (btw, i have a son and two daughters..from 4-13). I get all the help from the wife and kids during maintenance...fetching the net, siphon, pail, etc. And of course, we never miss our weekly visits to the lfs. And the kids contribute to the livestocks too from thier own pockets!
For sure, i won't be able to continue without their support.http://www.3reef.com/YaBBImages/smilies/2thumbsup.gif

    LOL

My daughter, when younger used to call the tank 'Daddies TV". My late wife also loved to test all her latest scuba gear in there as well :)

Tanks can be a great family affair, that's one of the reasons that I always gave my fish names :)

Gee. I wonder who you are speaking of...lol

Yeah, I am left for many reasons, one being my own conscious. My wife is VERY supportive, she actually helped me rip out my sand and put in starboard, but lately I spend WAY to much time cleaning and fiddling that I am neglecting her. Go BB and you will see what it is to have maint. It will just about kill you but the tank will look great and your corals will color up like you have never thought possible.

    Anyway, I'm out.

I thought BB was supposed to be easier? I think I will just keep my sand then ;D

We, as a family do the tank thing as well! I love the critters, daughter and friends ( 6 yrs old) will watch and watch with the magnifier finding little living things....and the hubby can buy gadgets! (which works great for me!)

I do all the maintenance tho....Trying to keep it managable ;D Supposed to be a hobby, not another job! I have too many jobs as it is! LOL!

No kidding, right. Well, I think it is supposed to be easier after the first 6 months. The detritus build up will gradually decrease, meaning less siphoning.

    Mike,

After 6 months without a sand bed, or corals, or fish, you willl not need to feed, and then you will not have any detritus. Certainly no algae.

A test tube of sailine would not be any more sterile, nor any more of a challenge.

Mike, come back to the living!!!!

Said with a grin and a poke ....

    Cheers,
    Ray

Who said anything about no corals, or fish? I know I didn't. You can ask many people that have been BB for a longer period of time, GregT, Bomber, Joefish...I could go on. They will tell you that the detritus decreases over time. This is due to many reasons.

Anyway, not going to make this a DSB vs BB debate...we can start another thread or just drop it like I would like to do. Or we can discuss it like adults by PM. Both have benefits, especially benefits to certain corals.

    Mike,
Wishing you well and hopefully, will come back to the hobby and it does not really matter if you go BB, DSB or whatever. Just be back into the hobby.

    Mike (aka MacnReef),

At times you have been rough as a Sears and Roebuck on a cold winter night after a stint of Mohammud's Revenge, butt (typed with a grin) that's OK. You are a bit of colour that will be missed.

I appologize for the sterile comment, however, I still feel ecosystems are best kept in large test tubes, with all the dirt and grime that accumulates. You were simply doing the duty that those of us with DSB leave to the "little people."

Once you get settled in with the family and things become re-established, I hope you can find some time to share your enjoyment of reefs with your family members, and maybe even find the time to occasionally say Hello here on the 3rd reef from the sun.

    Cheers
    Ray
