    Hello all!

Im thinking of getting a couple Hawaiian Feather Dusters and read that they require very good water conditions to thrive.

Now my question is In order to keep these interesting specimens alive Am I required to use RO water?

Ive read that tap water is bad to top off in your aquarium.

    Is this correct?

Or do I have to condition the water?

    My specs:
    29g
    Roughly 25lbs of LR
    Roughly 25 lbs of LS
    Coralife 65g SS
    Penguin bio wheel filter(removed wheels)
    2x24 T5S 1 460 ATNIC 1 10,000K currnet lighting
    1 fire fish
    1 pepermint shrimp
    A few small hermits

Is this sustanible for a duster?
Thank you for understanding my noob questions:p

Some tap water is very good with low tds, but it might contain chlorine - which a carbon filter would remove. You might want to have your tap water tested and invest in a RO/DI.

It's best to use R0 water for inverts, because of the copper in water from pipes in your plumbing. while i dont know if it will kill all inverts, since i do use tap water in my fresh water tank with shrimp in it. but from what i heard it could kill alot of corals and cause algae depending upon what it contains.

I would avoid using it if possible on a reef or invert tank

conditioning wont remove copper or phosphate or silicates. if you do use tap conditioning is a must to remove chlorine or chloramines

Im not sure how tap water would effect feather dusters, probably negatively(and im sure it would have alot to do with your specific water, since quality varies). feather dusters are filter feeders so if your worried about feeding it, you can buy phytoplankton in a bottle and add that every once in awhile
Thank you for understanding my noob questions:p

Saltwater Tank + Tap water = Reef Slaughter

Never use tap water in a Marine tank.

    Cool TY!
Yea Iam gonna invest in a RO but Im have no clue what to get or use.
    Im gonna look into those.

Not to be a jerk, but does it matter if my pipes are plastic?

How do you set up the RO units? do you mount them on a wall?
TYVM! it helps me out alot!

One of the best things you can do (well other then good lights and a skimmer) is get a ro/di unit. they can save you from allot of water problems down the road.
there are allot of places to get them , I got mine from bulkreef supply and it has already paid for itself(not having to buy ro/di water)

that way you know the water your putting in your tank is good.
I personally would get one that comes with TDS meters.

heres some for sale, i would suggest a tds meter so you can tell when the filters go bad instead of having to guess or wait tell problems araise. Also get a RO/DI not just RO, the DI filter will trap every thing except pure h20. the RO part catches alot of stuff and prevents you from having to change the DI frequently(DI is probably cost prohibitive alone with out the prefilter)

Not to be a jerk, but does it matter if my pipes are plastic?
plastic is safe, assuming were talking pvc and not some odd type that may leach bisphonel like some cheap water bottles. as for this pertaining to the necessity of a RO/DI(better then just RO), It is very rare for all piping in your house to be plastic, and theres no telling what it goes through at the treatment plant.
How do you set up the RO units? do you mount them on a wall?
    most people mount them.
TYVM! it helps me out alot!

I would test it to see how it reads first. Tap can be pretty good or pretty poor depending on where you live.
I wouldn't automatically knock tap like a lot of people do though. I have personally used nothing but tap from day one, and even my SPS don't seem to mind ;) But we have very good tap here, reads ~70-80 TDS.

Bulk Reef Supply is the best. I've bought from them twice. Great prices and excellent customer service.

i would recommend you starting a specific thread for this question so it doesnt get lost in this one. i would say it the answer depends how you softener you water(what chemicals), very soft water can be a problem not sure about very hard though.
some people might view asking a specific unrelated question in there thread as hijacking so just warning you.
