    so what kind of microinverts and pods, specifically - won't some of them just sort of happen on live rock anyway?

    Pods and other microinverts will hitchhike in on live rock, and you probably already have a bunch if you have live sand. If you have a flashlight when the tank is dark, shine it on the wall, and chances are there will be pods running around.
