I just noticed today these tears in the top fin of my achillies tang. The photo is not the best since the fish will not sit still. I have had him in the tank for about two weeks and he eats great. For the first few days my purple tang did chase him around but they do not mind each other now. Is this going to be a problem? If it is is there anything that can be done. It is not bite marks but looks almost like the fin is shredding.

My achilles tang and purple tang rough house occasionally , once or so every other month and someone gets a torn fin. I use a single dose of melafix, remove carbon and turn the skimmer off for a few days, Keep the flow going, food + vitamins up. do a water change and everyones fins normally are healed by then. and continue the process. Its been a while knock on wood since Ive had to do so.

    Good luck!

Just researched the melafix from you suggestion. Thank you for the quick response. I'll go pick some up in the morning. When I saw the tear I thought great there goes the fish I waited to get for 7 months and $120.00.

lol! My achilles tang was 224$ With shipping included in that! You definately got the better deal! LOL Im always paranoid with him. He always looks like he has ick in the morning but no its just sand :| 1st thing mine does is wake up, eat some nori, and goes to swim in the powerheads and shake off all the sand lol!

Man that is too funny. I look everyday at him because you hear all the stories about how prone they are to sickness. But he has always looked good till I saw the tear. I feel as if it will heal with the treatment.

Just an FYI, I read that achilles tangs dont make a very large mucus layer, hence them being prone to disease. Also that treating them with harsh medications can do more harm then good as well. Hence when I 1st got my achilles back in november and he broke out with ick, I was afraid to do a copper treatment! But no, I let it ride, fed used some melafix and vitamins and Hes still here with me today, He was a juvie wen baught had very little orange for his teardrop. and now his tear is begining to form. Im excited to watch this!

Im sure you will be too!
