My tank is normally ay 79 degrees its a 46 gallon. I keep my home temp at 75 at night and 77 during day. I went away for 2 days and raised the temp to 77. WHen I got home Sunday my tank was at 82.9. It has not lowered yet even with lowering the air conditioning to 75. I can't figure out why. Should I keep my lights off today? I added Chemiclean red slime remover yesterday afternoon. Could this do it. I will do a 25% water change maybe today

    Welcome to 3reef

The temperature is not all that bad so no need to stress about it yet. If you have a fan direct it across the water of the display tank or your sump. You should be able to run your lights today.

you might check on any powerheads and pumps to make sure that they are not malfunctioning. You might give them a good cleaning. I am assuming that you have checked on the heater.

You can also freeze a couple of bottles of water and drop them into the tank to cool off. Takes mine about 20 minutes to melt both bottles. It should, with that small volume of water, lower it a degree to a degree and a half. Do not open the bottles! Just keep them sealed and float them. 2in10 is right though...83 is not all that bad. With AC running, and the bottles, it should slowly drop the temp.

The temp isn't bad, bit the fact that it is staying that high could be, as it likely is the result of equipment failure. I would first check with a different thermometer. Most thermometers sold to us hobbyists are overpriced junk. Then check the heater, unplug it and see if the temp goes down. The heater could certainly be stuck on. Also check the pumps and other equipment for overheating. If equipment failure, such as a heater or
Pump is the case, it can be a major issue and needs to be resolved very quickly to prevent it from becoming worse and possibly crashing your tank.

What electronic components have you checked to see if there is a malfunction?

83 is not bad at all..I would not sweat it. When you get to a mature tank state like where my biocube is, you will learn that corals and fish and can take alot more then we really think. I was gone allll weeekend and left my lights on all day and all night and till 11 in the morning sunday. The tank temp was at 86, everything was open and happy. I would only start to freak out if the tank temp got to above 87 degrees. anything below 85 degrees is not a freak out point.

83 is fine to me. my old 75 used to hit that temp on a daily basis. never had any issues. I hope you put in an airstone when you added the chemiclean. that stuff will remove a good deal of oxygen from the tank. leaving the lights off will do wonders for letting the water cool.

Yeah the temp is fine, but he has his AC keeping the room at 75. Equipment shouldn't cause an 8 degree increase in temp over ambient, unless something is failing. If something is failing, best to find it before it fails further, not just say the temp if fine...
