As you all probably know I'm upgrading my 29 FOWLR to a 40b reef. I'm only going to be using about half of my current LR and will be adding a lot of dry rock from reefcleaners. I'm thinking that I will probably get a small cycle so I will need to find temporary housing for my clown pair and royal gramma. Can I put them in my 10g nano for a couple weeks while the new setup gets settled? They will be the first fish in the 10g, but it's been setup for about 2 months now. Would I need to add them slowly over a couple weeks? I do have a spare 10g that I could put some of the unused LR in as well I guess.

As always looking forward to great advice.

you shouldnt get a cycle if you use new sand, and dry rock like u said u ordered... and dont let your established rock sit out at all, keep it in a bucket with water.. ive moved many tanks, ive never had a problem with a single one,, most people have problems switching tanks when they mess up the sand bed and leaks tons of stuff back in the water causing that cycle..

well the 29g has only been up for about 3 months and I was planning on using the old sand (1-1.5" deep) and new, that's a bad idea? I was also going to use about 15-20lbs of my cured rock and 20 gallons old water and 20 gallons of new. I've never upgraded or changed systems so I'm not sure of the best practices in doing such a thing. I just want to make sure my fish have the easiest and safest transition.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I would put them in the running 10 gallon, and test daily for ammonia and nitrites and do a water change if indicated, until you know the 10 gallon can handle the new bio-load.

    Congrats on the up grade.

Saints fan 420 would be correct for a mature system, as over time, the sand collects a lot of nutrients and waste. However, I too, have moved several tanks, sandbed and all, with no issues. With only 1 - 1.5 inches and only 3 months old, you'll be fine.
