I have a VISI-Therm thermometer and heater. As I cycle my tank (waiting for ammonia peak), I haven't changed the temperature. Today I put the VISI-Therm into the tank just to have the readings.

My question is about electricity and water. Do you unplug the thermometer before reaching into the tank water? I understand that it isn't electrocuting the fish or coral (so logically it would be ok)...still water and electricity make me really nervous.

Is there a procedure that I should know?

It's only a problem if you have a short somewhere. You should have heaters, pumps, etc plugged into a GFCI.

Thanks. I'll visit a home supply store tomorrow and get a portable GFCI.
