Well i tore my 55gal down to have it drilled before i set it back up, and after i cleaned the sand out there was a huge yellow sticker that said Tempered Glass! broke my heart.

There is no way to drill tempered glass is there? Should i just buy a new tank?

most tanks these days are only tempered on the bottom.

Is it an old used tank?

I bought it new about a year and a half ago. The sticker was just on the bottom so you could be right about that. but...for an internal overflow i would need the drain to be in the bottom correct? or is there a way to work it from the side?

Your best bet is to take it to a glass shop. They can tell you if its tempred, and even drill it for you for a decent price.
The tempered glass all the way around is not just for new tanks. I bought my tank about 6 months ago from PetCo, and its tempered all the way around

drill the bottom of the back. if the sticker only says the bottoms tempered then the sides aren't(this is common in 55s). but of course if you looking for a excuse to get a new tank now you have it.
