What should I be using to measure my tanks temp and should it be in the tank or my sump.Looking for the most accurate device I can find but in reasonable price range.

Make sure you have a probe in the water, not those cheap stick on the glass colored tape--I measure mine in the tank, cause that is where the fish live. The sump may be hotter in the winter with the heater on etc. You can buy a coralife led for about 8 bucks. I used mine the first year until I bought a chiller which has a red led digital read out on the front panel. I still check it against my coralife now and then. Just to keep them honest.

I have a normal thermometer in the sump of my tank. Those stick on type really dont work well. It is in an area that gets water directly out of the DT so it should be a good indicator of the tanks temp.

I have mine in the DT. I feel that if it was in the sump I wouldn't check it. Out of sight out of mind kind of thing.

Digital thermometers with probe in the water are ok, but have a tendancy to read a little wrong, i use a digital and i check it 3 times a day. If and when i buy a new thermometer i would go with just a standard and let it float inside the DT

The temp probes that come with controllers (like the Aquacontroller Jr) are some of the more accurate ones IME. I have 2 thermometers on my system though and have checked them both against a third to triple-check. I also keep everything in my sump in the chamber that the heaters are in.

I second the fact that the coralife digital thermometers don't read correctly. I have three of them. One reads 80. one reads 125, and the other is 68. So I really don't recommend these units.
