Test kit suggetions?

So I've been lazy about not getting my own test kits and letting my LFS test them instead. I decided its time to get some.

Any suggestions on what are some good brands to buy, with an emphasis on CHEAP!!

also, what are the neccessities..
I know I need to have a nitrate tester, but is nitrites essential also?
I know I need to test salinity, but are the plastic things ok? I don't have money for a refractometer.
I know I need to test ammonia, as well as PH.

Am I missing any of the essentials?

 

get the API test kit its like 30 bucks

 

+1 on the api kit, ive been using one and it seems to be working fine, easy to understand and use as well as affordable.

what about the salinity tester? are they all the same? Can I pick up one from the LFS?

 

A refractometer can be found for $40 bucks or so -- without one you are kinda guessing and close isn't good enough in this game. JMHO

 

if you can only afford a specific gravity gauge get the instant ocean one they are like $12
