I've been raising mg slowly to help battle a small bryopsis problem over the last two days. My problem is testing, I have an elos mg test kit and from what I can tell it maxes out at 1450ppm and wont read higher. I see people testing in the 1600's and higher and was wondering what test kit they are using and if anyone can tell me a trick to reading higher with the elos kit I have now. Thanks for any help!

I never used the Elos kit but most others are done like this; you do the test and if it max(es) out you redo till you get the color change and then add the second result to the first one.

I'm only familiar with the Elos have no experience with any of the others. The Elos uses 2 3ml viles of tank water to get your number, so there are 2 color changes to one result. Are the others this way? If so which color change do you add to the first test result? Test last night went like this. 1) 35 drops to vile one for first color change, 2) 6 drops in vile two for color change. Subtract 6 from 35. So 29 then multiply that x50. So 29x50= 1450. So which test would I redo and add to that number? Thanks again for the help!

All my tests are Elos & have used it for years. I have been testing my MG & CA on a daily basis, because both were low & have been raising it a little at a time. I can pretty much do it in my sleep now & the test is very easy and so are the results.

One, you do know that it does have an expiration date on the box right? Though it shouldn't of expired, it's not impossible. Two, what temp do you keep your kits at? Elos USA has their kits shipped overnight, from Elos Italy where it is made. Unlike other test kits that are shipped in a shipping container over the ocean, which means depending where it is on the ship, that container could get very hot or cold at times, making tests unreliable. Elos has signed agreements that their vendors Marine Depot & such must have their kits in a temp controlled environment & their kits can not sit, so that they don't have a short shelf when we get them.

The reason I know all this, is that I just spoke to the owner Jesse of Elos USA a week ago. Really nice guy. Here's the contact number for Elos USA & ask him about the possible high range (925) 600-8020.

One thing I did ask him, is about expired tests. He said you'll know, they will never color change. My kits have expired, but are still testing correctly. I know this because I have tested them against other good Elos tests.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for the input, I don't have the box in front of me now but I've only had it for about 2 months or so and bought it from Foster and smith. I keep the kit in a closet that has a temp around 72 degrees. The kits still change color and the colors are bright and very easy to distinguish from one another. Did you mean to leave his number? It isn't showing up, ill find it on there site and give them a call. Thanks again, if anyone else has any input on this please chime in thank you!

Just got off the phone with Jesse at Elos (very nice guy btw extremely helpful) and apparently the Elos mg test kit has no limit to what it will read as far as ppm. He informed me that mg isn't like alk where it can be tested almost immediately and see the numbers. You need to wait 24hours to see the results of it typically. So I'll check it again tonight and hopefully see that it has raised a little. Thanks again for the number and the advice.

Uh, what? What test kit takes 24 hours to run mag?

I would take the Red Sea kit, with all of its annoyances, over a 24 hour kit...
