You will not go wrong with a RODI filter. You should have a lot of fun selecting from the rock you bought from John. 50lbs will fill the 20 to the gills.

I also plan on using the existing rock from my 10 gallon, so I will have alot of rock to choose from. Select pieces will be chosen for the display tank and then i will stuff what i can into the sump. i am sure I will have some left over for my next tank...

As for an RODI, I have been looking at purewaterclub.com and thinking about getting this one.

Would that unit be ok? Again I have to stay on the cheaper side of things, to stay under my budget, so for the money, will this unit give me good water?

Yes but it may only last 18 months before the casing breaks. That is what happened with mine. You will be using a lot less water than I was so it may go longer. Make sure and make at least 10 gallons of water each time to prevent TDS creep.

Thanks! I think I will order that one and hope for the best.

    QUESTION:

I am starting to plan my plumbing into the fuge and have noticed that most everyone uses pvc pipe for their plumbing. The way that my stand is arranged is a little wonky and by the end of it I would probably have 3-4 90 degree elbows to line everything up.

So my quesiton is, is there a downside to using flexible tubing for the plumbing as opposed to the pvc pipe?

I use the flexible tubing on the return and have had no problems with it. I don't see why there would be any problems using it all around. Just make sure you get as large of tubing as you can going down to keep from running the sump dry.

I just got my overflow in the mail today, pretty excited. I have no experience with overflow boxes but I like how sleek it is. It looks good on the 20 long.

I am going to test it out this evening. Hopefully everything else will arrive tomorrow and saturday...

I'm really eager to see how you like the overflow! :) I plan on getting one myself in the near future.

so far so good with the overflow. I will post some pics tomorrow, as I am too lazy to take the pics and load them up...

But it keeps its siphon well, I was trying to stop the siphon by creating a lot of bubbles but they just got whooshed right down and did not collect in the u-tube. I was creating ALOT of surface turbulence and there was no sign of a siphon break so I am quite confident that it will work well over an extended period.

I have a small pond pump that I set-up as a make-shift return and everything is running smooth. Stopping and starting the pump repeatedly created no issues with the siphon either. The loudness of the overflow varied depending on the gph. I can control the flow on my pump, and at the lowest setting, the overflow is very quiet and you can see the water running down the sides of the drain pipe. When I increase the rate however, the overflow gets quite a bit louder as the water begins to fall down the drain as opposed to clinging to the sides.

So it seems like it is pretty easy to dial it in so that it is quit silent. I think I will set up a ball valve on my return pump for my set-up so that I can reduce the flow to get that sweet spot.

Can't wait to get it all plumbed in and ready to go.

    No Problemo..

So I got tons of goodies today!

I got my light, and the new bulbs, rio pump, koralia pump...no rocks though :(

But I am ready to get everything plumbed in. I am about to go to the hardware store to buy some of the plumping stuff.

    Question:

I was wondering if I should bother with a baffling system in the 10 gallon sump. Is it ok if I just leave it open with the input and out put on opposite sides of the tank? I am planning on having a powerhead in the sump for increased water flow throughout.

It is mostly out of laziness that i don't want to glue some baffles in there. But if this will not work, I will buy some acrylic pieces at the hardware store and silicon them in.

    Any input would be great!
