I'm looking into it as well. It makes sense, the sump is essentially a filter. Why have water rushing through as quick as possible? The way I have mine set up right now, only about 20% of the water flowing through is hitting the skimmer/reactor/DSB... doh!

Sort of a random thought and I'm not entirely sure if it would even be worth it but has anyone T'd off the line from their return pump to go to the DT as well as back to the skimmer box in order to ensure that more of the water goes through the skimmer?

That is a method used to control the flow from a pump that is too strong for the system instead of dialing it back.

I look at it differently. The skimmer will take in as much water as it needs. The lower flew rate does not slow down the power of the skimmer pump. The higher flow rate keeps particals floating "suspended" for the filter (skimmer, carbon, sock) to catch. At least that is my thinking.

^ This thread made me think about flows pretty much all day today and I kinda agree with Scott.
If you have a bigger/wider inlet of the overflow, like coast to coast, the filtering capacity/efficiency of the system goes up as a whole. So even tho I have a tiny sump in the system, I still like more water movement (not more than right now). It looks and feels clearer that way.

Lots of flow is good in the tank. Circulation pumps are the most efficient way to achieve good flow in the DT.

Agreed, you do need more flow via pumps, and it should not depend on the return pump.
