That is the way I look at it, I know of two other local reefers in my area that have these running one with the ATS alone and one like me, and the results speak for themselves. There is always going to be the debate out there about an SPS scrubbed tank but I don't see that as being important the vast majority of reefers like to keep a mixed reef anyway, and besides that there is proof of tanks with large amounts of SPS.

Good luck with your search and be sure to tell us about your ATS build if you do one.

I can understand not wanting to see power heads all over your tank but with the tech out there now like the MP evotech pumps if you have the money they are really not that intrusive.

And as far as a closed loop goes I couldn't ever do something like that. There are to many areas for a leak to spring up and drain a tank, I don't know how others sleep at night with closed loops! :D

As far as the water being displaced quickly idea, I don't really seeing that being a problem. As long as there is water in the tank then there are organisms in the water which is what the coral and filter feeders are going to eat. Same with a skimmer pump idea the skimmer doesn't care how fast or slow the water is going by, since its pump is rated for say 250 gph it will pull in 250 gph. Also I am not sure how others feed but since I have a coast to coast overflow I know that I would not be able to feed unless I turn off my return pump. So what I do is shut it down via my controller for a preset time (around 8 min) and feed there is plenty of time for my fish to eat up that way.

I am not trying to be one sided here and I understand the aspect of wanting a quieter system. I just don't see how making your water so slow is going to be that much of a benefit. Especially since we all know that when food or waste is not moved around or picked up that is rots and raises your bad nutrient levels.

I'm not making my DT water slow down too much... I have 3x1050 koralias in there. I'm slowing down the "filter rate" of the tank, so to speak. Suspended food and waste will still be filtered out in a reasonalbe amount of time, provided it remains suspended (hence the powerheads). I'm simply giving the food a little longer "linger" time. Also, if my skimmer is pulling 250gph, why would I have 1500gph zooming past it?

Oh, and I agree about the closed loop. Unless you have a dedicated fish room, there's no where to hide all that plumbing. And I wouldnt be able to sleep at night either...

I picked up a 40 breeder on CL a few weeks ago for my sump. Need to order skimmer (going with a SWC 160 cone) then get the glass cut for the sump.

the 1500gph wont make a difference even if the return pump is off the skimmer is still pulling 250gph.

Does any one on here happen of have a smaller length light above there DT? I had though about it before and it could cut cost from a 48" fixture.

I think we agree then? ;)

The guy I bought my system from had a 36" fixture about his, supplimented by some additional PCs. He was only growing softies.

I guess it depends on what you want to grow. Softies, sure... SPS/Clams/maybe LPS, not so sure. Plus I would think the light spread and intensity would be pretty weak at the ends, but maybe good enought to have SPS/LPS in the middle, and softies on the ends of the tank.
