OK, so now that I have all the hardware needed, I will be finally setting up my tank soon and I will obviously be starting with rock and substrate.

I have chosen the Indo-Pacific Arag-Alive substrate, already got 40lbs of that on the way. I also have about 30ish lbs. of dry base rock from an old, old FOWLR that was decomissioned about 4 yeas ago.

I want some actual live rock to both seed the dry rock/sand and to get a little biodiversity. I have heard many people say that they would just use all base rock, but LR is kinda like gambling: sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I like to gamble, and am fully capable of dealing with undesirables harshly ;).

What I want to know is: What is the best looking LR in your opinion? Also, where can I find a reasonably priced AND good quality source?

    Any words of wisdom appreciated!

Hey ReefJ, pretty much I look for LR with as much porosity (holes, crevices, etc.). This is where all the little critters live and thrive. This is kinda hard to do online so I hit the LFS's and find what I want. Sooner or later, coraline algae will take over anyway (IMHO).
Check out our group buy from Bulk Reef Supply (thread). They've got several grades of some good dry rock at great prices....and so much other reef stuff. You'll get good discounts if you join in. Have a friend with an established tank give you a coupla nuggs of LR and a scoop of his sand from his/her tank!!
Theres some wisdom for ya buddy.....save!save!save!;D

The problem with buying "precured live rock" which is what I think you want is that a) as you mentioned, you usually get some hitch hikers, and not all of them you can easily deal with, trust me, and b) you usually have die off anyways from shipping. If you want real live rock, I would look on craigslist or ebay. I have seen many ads for live rock that is still in a very well established tank. It would be cheaper, safer and easier to go with all base rock, but to each his own.

I can only find Bali on the site :-/

and I know a LFS would normally be a great place to look for rocks, but there are only 2 decent ones near me and all of thier rocks look like :-X

Fiji! Really neat looking and tons of holes. Also, it is not chopped off in the ocean, but collected when it's already fallen off (at least the rock at my LFS). The best hitch hikers have come in my Fiji rock, and it has so many holes my fish love to swim through it.

John from Reefcleaners (3reef sponsor) also has AWESOME dry rock! Best I have ever seen. I started with almost all base rock, with a few really choice LR pieces from my LFS. Best advice I ever got!

I also have Pukani in my tank and am very pleased with its look and size to weight ratio.
