So rummaging through the basement of my parents house I found this sweet glass tube

I thinking it would be cool if I made a stand for it to keep it horizontal ( or even keep it vertical, and put corals live rock and crabs worms shrimp and snails. The dimensions are 53'x4 I calculated it out to roughly 3gal.

If I put a power head on one end and connected it to a sump would this work? Are there many corals that can survive in a tube like this? Would I be better off turning it vertical? How would crabs, shrimp, worms, and snails hold up in there? I'm going to go ahead and say no but any remote possibility of a goby?

    GIMME SOME FEED BACK!!!!!

if you need to reach the bottom, your in trouble. light from the top wont reach far enough to support corals. a powerhead small enough to reach the bottom wont be strong enough to reach the top and will just blow things around in such a small space. water chemistry will probably swing a lot. over all cool idea, just not practical IMO

What if done horizontally? if there was just a steady flow of water constantly cycleing from my tube to a sump/fuge would it maybe work?

you could always sell it to a local headshop and then use the $ to buy a tank :)

possibly, but how would you ever access the inside of the tank? if it was horizontal, you wouldnt be able to open either end or else, flood. and unless you are really good with plumbing and securing glass with sealants it might be tough. i really hate to say all these negative things but im just trying to be honest. if i were you, i would actually try it for the heck of it, but i cant see it being very successful

why don't you connect it to two 10 gallon tanks, so the fish can swim through it.

what would be a cooler idea is to use this and connect 2 tanks toguether and let it be a
" bridge"... a small power head to keep the current in the tube and that would be an awesome idea IMO.. ( idk if this would work either but also an idea lol)

Your idea is pretty cool but like said above it really isnt practical.

it all depends on what you want in there. I could see you setting it up horizontally with a sump/fuge and putting the rock in where you want from the start, then letting some zoas and shrooms or something like that grow it's way into the middle. I agree not really practical, but who can say that any of our tanks are practical lol. I mean how much do we spend just to tell each other "OHHH I would not do that" and my favorite "you better get that off your rock, it's going to grow everywhere" when talking about someones coral they just put on the rock. I say go for it, I want to see it!

man, that would be cool to see in action (working properly). If you are going to give this a go i would say go horizontal for lighting, plumbing, flow, and may more reasons.
As many have already pointed out accessing the middle portion of the tube would be nearly imposable and i think is the main drawback to this design. However, (and im not sure if this can be done) if you can cut openings out of the glass (just like a regular tank lid) you would be able to access the middle area of the tube, but i dont know how good even that would be as there would be the risk of water coming out of the cutouts.

Anywho, good luck with this build! I say go for it and if nothing else we will all learn how something like this could potentially work.:)
