Okay, so, I have an established FW tank and was wondering if the bacteria can be used to seed a SW tank of the same size. Does anyone know of this being possible?

No.FW bacteria will not live in SW and vice versa.

Frankly, just do it simply and get either seeded sand or live rock from an existing SW system.

Yes there are Anaerobic and Aerobic bacteria in both FW and SW, and yes the principle is basically the same with regard to introduction and promoting growth of both types.

As Vinny posted stick with SW introduction. It really does not need to be complicated.

Edit: No you can not cycle a tank with the same Anaerobic and Aerobic bacteria found in a FW tank as those found in a SW tank. Sorry if I was not clear,

Well thought I would ask anyways. I am setting up a QT tank for my first fish purchase. I want the tank to be cycled really quick ( I know don't rush things). I am starting my aquascaping on thursday and will be filling my tank the following week to cycle. Since my son wants to get a hippo tang I want to QT it for a month or so just to make sure that it doesnt introduce any ich to my tank. How can I get the cycle done in a week?

i would advise against a hippo tang to be added a week after the system has been set-up. You're asking for problems. seriously

Honest answer is you can not get it done in a week. Avoid impulse buys at all cost.

I have heard of people having instant cycles. How is that possible? Just wondering. I understand what you are saying about no impulse buys. If I have to wait 2 -4 weeks for the parameters to show 0-0-0 then I will. I am not going to introduce a pet in an undesirable environment. I am just wanting to speed up the process for my QT tank, not my main tank. I don't mind keeping the Hippo Tang in QT for a month or 2.

Is this hippo tang for your new 55g? Sorry Z, but that's a very bad idea. Those fish get large and require a lot of free swimming space. LA recommends at least 180g tank, and that's from someone in the business of selling the fish.

I guess I didn't look at the fish requirements. Back to the drawing bored. (note to self, check requirements of fish before asking questions, lol.)

I will be back with another idea.
