I have been reading this site for a couple days now and I would like to start off by thanking everyone for all the helpful information.. I have had a saltwater tank, in the past, but it was a 10 gal tank and only had a couple cheap fish in it.. I now want to start a 55 gal reef tank.. I have been researching the hobby for several months, but I am a bit rushed now.. I have a birthday coming up and I think my girlfriend wants to buy me a "start up kit".. I want to make sure I have the filtration system set up right, from the start, so I will not have to change it later.. Any tips would be very much appreciated.. All I have at the moment is the aquarium and the stand.. I Know most of what I need to get started but not quite sure on the filter itself and how to achieve the right amount of circulation throughout the tank..

    Thanks,
    Stoney..

Welcome! Your best bet would be to drill the tank and set up a sump under the tank.

    Welcome to 3reef Stoney.

The live rock should be your biggest filter, next a quality skimmer. Some type of sponge or floss for mechanical filtration.

If you have the money go for the MP's, if not larger Korailas.

So many ways to "skin a cat", just keep doing the research and get as many opinions as you can.

    +1 to live rock

Also, flow is alot more important that actual filtration alot to the time. If you have alot of flow and rock and do weekly water changes, that's the best filtration.
