    Jon,

Was doing too much thinking the other night. still getting some burned tips with the KH at 8.0. it could be lingering effects form having it too high previously, but had this question in my head,

IS the amount of pellets needed for a tank proportionate to the livestock count or the total system water volume?

It's about surface area and total mass of organic Carbon available for consumption. Now in a low bioload tank bacterial colonies on the pellets will be thin and sparse. On higher load tanks the colonies will be more dense.

But remember, without bacterial action the pellets are basically inert... adding nothing to the water. EcoBAK is not "dosing"... it is a food source that is consumed at a rate determined by the amount of nutrients and bacteria in the system.

    Jon,

thats the exact answer I needed. (i think). I was considering reducing the volume of my pellets as I only have 8 fish. Its all food for thought.

    Jon,
I increased my volume of pellets to hopefully spread out the bacteria with the hope that this would reduce the tendency to clump. Does this make sense?

    Hello Pickupman,

But it doesn't matter much... If you only have 8 fish that just means that you will have smaller colonies on your pellets surface. The ecoBAK pellets are a constant, the nutrient level and mass of bacterial populations are the variable.

yes absolutely. When you have a large reactor with a small quantity of ecoBAK the flow can be erratic.

No way has it been long enough since your initial post about burnt tips....tips are already burnt from before....it'll be quite sometime before recovery is noticed.Continue the 8.0 for 6 months or so, then draw another conclusion.

Isn't that what most reefers ultimately strive for?

Jon, I have been running Ecobak now for about 7 months. I asked you back then in this thread about using a canister filter. I'm sure you remember, cuz I'm the only guy that is using one;D

Anyways, I was discussing this with someone the other day, and they said it was a bad idea to have the return of my canister going directly back into my water column. That the bacteria on the surface of the pellets would make their way into the tank and cause a crash. Is there any truth to this?
