Other aquafarmers would be the primary guess. But I don't want to get my head bitten off for making "nasty innuendo,s" about them.;D

I know dix......but threads get closed when members start to disagree in such a fashion.....just trying to mellow things out. I'd be interested in following this one to the conclusion. If other aquafarmers know the location......then that would be a good place to start.

You are correct, as usual ... I just deleted my retort in its entirety. ;)

I hope this mystery gets solved!

    Ouch,
So it was snatched some time in the last 18 months? Thats a rough time frame to narrow down.

That's a big Dee-de-dee on that one. "I swear no one knew about my rock, the only people who are anywhere near it are scuba divers and other aquafarmers!" Um, hello? Anyone home? I'm pretty sure we can put at least two groups of people into the suspect pool. These people would have knowledge of the aquafarm, and easy access to said farm. And it is possible they belong in both groups. How easy would it be for an aquafarmer to simply transfer the rock he had to their own cache of rock?

And yes, I read the whole thing. It sounds like the guy whose rock was stolen was kind of naive about the whole thing.

And yes, let's try to keep this thread calm. It may be the Bucket Forum, but this is still 3Reef. I prefer to not see 3reefers bashed and abused, and I very much like it when threads are kept open by our beautiful and handsome team of admins.

Also, people are wondering why he didn't see people hauling off rock? Well, the article stated that the farm was near seven other aquafarms. So boaters seeing rock being hauled and transported would have been quite the norm around there. Novak, the man whose rock was stolen, had last check on his aquafarm 1.5 years (18 months) ago, as madlarkin stated. So they didn't merely take the rock in one planned swoop. It could have been little by little for months on end. Possibly even a crime circle formed by the seven other farmers. 300,000 pounds or rock, distributed to the seven other farms, still gives each farmer around 43,000 pounds of rock added freely to their inventory. Which could increase their profit from between $129,000 to almost $500,000 depending on if they sold it off as wholesale or retail.

Lost your livelihood? Really? You Captain's license doesn't exactly expire when someone steals your rock. Last time I check anyways...

Eigh, there is a point I would disagree on. It sounds like the guy went out on quite a limb investing in the material and equipment to make this happen.

That being said, as bad as I feel for him it seems like this was an all-eggs-in-one-basket scenario.

That really stinks but I agree with Jwin. It was probably taken little by little over the last year. They could of taken 666 pounds of rock everyday for 450 days and it would all be gone. Now thats just evil. But it does say in the artical that the rock was not insured so I doubt he is doing this to collect without having to do the dirty work of selling it independently. The only way he would do this himself would be to steal it and sell it under the table to avoid paying taxes but that would still leave a large paper trail and be pretty dumb on his part. So I doubt he did that

Yea he could still throw some more rock down there since he has a licence, but that would require another large investment and a couple more years before he could harvest. So all in all, he was pretty nieve about the whole thing given that in this economy there are alot of people who would steal the shirt off your back if it was going to improve there bank roll. Why not steal a couple mill worth of rock? Don't haft to worry about leaving behind DNA or finger prints, high traffic area so minimal suspicion, and rocks don't have seriel numbers so they are untracible. Sounds like the perfect crime to me. I feal bad for the guy but to leave something that valuable un attended for a year and half is just foolish. IMO

If it was the neiboring farmers, then couldnt they check to see how much rock they have now/how much they have sold and compare it to what they have purchased. but I am not throwing out an accusations because there is no proof that the neiboring farmers had anything to do with it. But if I was them and innocent, I would be gathering up my reciepts to clear my name.IMO

::) I suppose I should be glad that I haven't logged on since yesterday afternoon and didn't see what had been said on this thread before posts were edited. If I had known that this article would have raised so many hackles, I would never have posted it. Let's hope everyone can remain civil so that I don't have to close this thread.

The article states the rock was NOT insured...

And if anything the price of LR here in FL would go down - you have extra 300,000 pounds of rock you need to unload.. quickly :-/
