So i have a 90 gallon perfecto reef ready tank coming next thursday. Im going to set up a 20 gallon long as a sump. The overflow that comes with the tank i believe is 700gph. What kind of pump should i look at? PS. i have metal halides with no chiller yet. I was thinking submersible but then thought about water transfer. What should my return rate be?

A Mag Drive 7 should be ok.

So will that supply 700gph to the tank at 4' to the tank. Also, should i consider another pump for additional circulation in the tank?

Why? Is the tank drilled? Or do you want to run a seperate closed loop?
Why not just buy a couple koralia 3 or 4 powerheads for extra internal circulation. You won't get all that turnover going through your sump or wet dry.

Yes the tank is drilled.....I was thinking about the koralia's. Two working against each other? one on each side of the tank?

I know the sump return should not supply all the circulation because if the drain does not support the return then the sump can go dry. And the larger return pump can produce more heat. I got someone selling me a rio 1580, i cant find any specs but it should supply 1000 gph at the height. Will this be sufficient circulation in a 90 gal reef?

A couple Koralia 2's would suffice.

A Mag7 will give you about 500gph at 4' of head. For a 90G tank, I would get 2 or 3Koralia 3's for in tank circulation. Or you can get a couple Vortechs if you really want to have nice circulation that you can adjust.

if the overflow can only do 700gph install atleast a mag 9.5 it should get you close to maxing it out, just install a ball valve so you can dial it back a bit if need be
I use 1 K4 and a mag18 in mine so you may need a couple other powerheads to keep from having any stagnant spots

I have a Mag 9.5 on my 90 and it works great. I was originally planning a Mag 7 but my LFS talked me into the 9.5. It was a good suggestion. I have a ball valve, but leave it wide open. I also run 3 Koralia 3's. That's probably a little much though.
