I found the major downfall to this tank this morning. Apparently light bulbs are fragile. I was working in my sump and just barely bumped the thing. It shattered of course and dumped my live stock into the sump:(

I'm taking this as a sign that it wouldn't work. I'm still thinking of trying a different bio-sphere, but I'm going to start easier with less live stock.

There is no way you can get that to equilibrate in that small of a space... there are so many organisms that go through countless reactions taking place all over the earths surface... Bacteria in china influence the reef tank in your basement.

It's just not feasible... You'd at least have to do it to scale... so take the landmass of the earth and make it proportional to the sand in your biosphere and air and water... etc...

I liked the presentation and suspect that a bit of daily water changes and you'd have a conversation pice for your living room, just don't bump it...

the biosphere's do work. I used to have one like this (only it was more spherical). It survived for about 9 months or so. It's not eternal, but it lasted a good long while.

Indeed, they are well documented. My next attempt will be only tank water. As I hear it there is a lot of stuff that will grow up in it and amaze you.
