I keep mine at 80 and I prefer this level because it helps with a slightly faster metabolism for corals and fish. I dont usually fluctuate at all but if I were to set it up to say 82 I would not be sweating it because I know my oxygen levels will be fine. I would get nervous going above that though depending on how much O2 is in the water.

I understand why they say for it to be in the mid 70's... It will increase your oxygen in the water and will help to maintain your ORP higher. In some tanks that are new or have a lot going on and need this higher ORP then it is reasonable.
For example: We keep the 500g DT at PSU at 76-77 because the bioload is insane in there... consequently we run an ORP of about 440-490 every day.

Mine was running at 81-82F. But since my mag12 crapped out and have since been using a Rio my temp now runs between 77-78 during the day.. It has been running like this for about 2 weeks with no changes to anything.. We have since gotten a cold front down here in Florida and the temp drops to 75.5 during the night.. Still now problems.. So to sum it up I have gone from 75 to 83 at some points with no problems..

Agree with inwall temps vary based on depth of the water.

surface temperature should be the maximum temperature.

I keep my water at 79-81 degrees F in the summer. Goes to about 78-80 in the winter. This is measured in the middle/bottom of my tank.

I keep mine between 78-80 with a chiller. Chiller is preset at 78 so when it reaches 80 it kicks on to bring it back down. My tank has been running for 9 months now with this temp and no issues. The less fluctuation the better.

mine has been 77.4f-78.6f (night-day)for the last 3 months. before my RKL it would jump around much more and at its highest (83ish) the only problems i encountered were algae growth, which i believe is rather normal and to be expected. i like to hold the 78 range simply because its the easiest to maintain and i can keep it there within a degree. not sure who has this as a tag but i'll quote it all the same "S.P.S=stability promotes sucess".

Mine is 74F at night and goes back up to 78F when lights are on. I have no heater going but thinking of getting one to keep the lower temp around 76F. I have no problem with my coral but I am afraid that 74 may be to low after reading everybody s post.
