I went to my LFS today and my teacher told me that I was having trouble growing Corraline because I have metal srews in my Sump Return Pump and other areas of my tank. He went on to tell me that any metal would cause rust and would kill initial growth of corraline dead. He says there is NO SUCH THING as Stainless Steel Screws and to remove all metal clamps screws and all metal. He says use tie straps where needed but remove the metal ASAP. So I came home and did just that.....I believe him!!!!! Anyone else believe this to be true false??????

im not sure what it could harm. i know metals in general arent good for your tank but i think there might be one or two that are good. not sure if iron is one of those though.

you definitely dont want any sort of metal that will rust in your tank . as far as it inhibiting coraline, im not so sure about that.

LFS dude says that if you remove the SS screws you will se residue of RUST left on the washers. He says a little goes a long ways just like the level of purification of water determines how well your stock will do. Kinda makes sense in the biological world.

Not all SS screws are made equal. Some are made with better quality metals than others. The SS screws that are on my Magdrives never rust.

I see them every month or so when I clean out the pumps. No rust here. If you use carbon, you should be fine.

Luna is correct not all stainless is the same there are different grades, 304, 307 etc., but you can see rust on stainless screws if they were tightened by a driver that was used on non stainless, bc it will leave a residue. For this reason when we work work stainless pipe at work we need separate welders tools and grinders and what not for reg pipe and stainless pipe.

Funny the topic came up. I found magnets (housing) specific for frag racks rusting to all heck! You'd think they could make quality stuff compared to what you pay. :-[
