Went to do water change today and noticed my thermometer was broken in my saltwater reservoir.. Both pumped and heater are covered in what looks like rust, orange/brown crust. I got most off my heater, but both pumps are done im assuming. Does anyone know if I put them in any solution that would make it safe to continue use? So annoyed with myself right now for leaving that in there. Live, Reef and Learn I guess.

This is the thermo I was using.

are those little BBs steel?..that's the rust maybe?...I would not think anything in those would be harmful...a buddy of mine broke his in his 55 gallon tank...cleaned out the debris and all was good....that sucks..hows the tank params?..got a picture of the pumps.
I have one just like it also...I run three..the tape one..the glass one and a battery one..

I was thinking thats probably what caused the rust, luckily I noticed this before I did the water change. And the mercury also didnt break so maybe it would be safe to use...

.. I think they use something else these days...no bueno mecury...I'd be shocked if it contained any toxins at all...due the nature of its function.
..but then again, I'm surprised those BBs are steel..

That is not a mercury thermometer. It is alcohol dyed red, so its probably not a big deal.

That little alcohol is probably already evaporated from the sump. Could be the dye is contributing to your red as well.
