its hard to say, but just get 2 for now, see how its goes, start out with some mushrooms and leathers and zoas, then later down the road, add a monti cap, see how it responds, if it doesnt look good, add another bulb and so on....

no point of buying all of them at once.. until you see how much u need

and yes, the dimmable ones would be better for you since you want to have moonlights... the boostled ones can not do moonlights, they are just an on or off light

roughly one of these will cover a 2x2 area, but i would go one per foot with 80 degree optics

thanks saintsfan. I'm not even sure if I can get different degree lamps or not. My tank is 24 inches tall so I might need something that doesn't spread as wide, but goes deeper.

How exactly do you do moonlights on a dimmable fixture? Is it something that works with a timer? Seems like something you'd have to manually dial down.

if you have a controller, most of them you can program to dim at whatever times you want...

but i think the orphek will come with a small controlller you lets u manually dim them... i could be wrong tho, ill check into for you..

but my apex controller will dim my lights how ever i want.. i would strongly advise you to look into a controller somewhat soon as well... my self, and anyone else that has bought one will tell you it is one of the most important pieces of equipment on my tank

I don't think that I would just dim the lights down to use them as moonlights. I'm not sure they would even go low enough.

As for those orphek lights, I believe you dim them with a standard household dimmer switch on the 120ac power. So you can't hook them up to a controller. Personally I would stick with the boost par30s. They are proven time and time again with plenty of people posting pics of them. They also have awesome customer service. The orphek lights use a mystery led emitter that nobody knows much about, and it seems like not as many people are using them. Just my 2cents

My only problem with the boost par30s is how do I do moonlights then? I'd already have to buy 4 of those probably.

Buy a cheap led strip. I've got an rgb led strip so I can have any color moonlights I want.

My problem would be finding a place to put them. I really like the reef clamps that you can get with the Boosts. I suppose I could try to attach the moonlights to the lamp, or maybe neck of the clamp?

I have a suspended ceiling in my den so hanging things from the ceiling wouldn't be very stable. I think I may be able to rig something up attaching them to the neck of the clamp.
