The diatoms are a normal part of cycling

    Fishoholic,
Thanks, yeah I have a huge snail with some sort of fuzzy exterior at night and a regualr shell during the day. Also I have found some little animals living in my live rock, I am not sure what they are but I managed to take a video and hopefully I will be able to upload it.

    Froc3,
    Thanks alot!

    Yeager,

Do you have any ideas on roughly how long it will take for the diatoms to dissipate? My tank is looking pretty messy right about now.

Cool, congrats! As far as the diatoms, it's normal during the cycling. They are the reason why your nitrates are showing zero. They will absorb the nitrates until you have sufficient anaerobic bacteria built up to process the nitrates naturally. When that happens, your diatom will die off. That should take another month or longer, don't worry. If you don't like the algae, get a couple turbo snails and they will clean things up in a week.
Too get your tank cooled off, you can use a simple PC fan and connect it to a 12V DC power supply. That's how I cool off my JBJ, it works well and is much cheaper than a $350 chiller. Until then, you can get some of those icebox coolers (like those gel ice packs, or those blue plastic things that you freeze) and put them into sandwich baggies and put them in the water to cool the tank down. :)

The all-in-one cubes run hot. It's just something we gotta deal with.

However, you can install some additional fans and drill a few exhaust holes and ur all set. Mine stays at 80 now and goes down to about 77 at night.

GL with the tank, a little worried that you put that awesome clown in there (damsel's are ok to die in my book) during the cycle tho - but hey, I did the same thing too. ;)

I'll take some pics tonight when I get home. I'll also look for some fans you can use as well.

Did you figure out your cooling problem? I made a riser out of acrylic that holds a fan and creates a cross breeze worke very well during the summer. Here in colorado the temp stays at around 78 during the day.
