All you have to do is look for healthy specimens, do a fresh water and methylene blue dip and quarentine for 2-3 weeks and your tangs should be ok. I have a Blue Hippo tang , Purple Tang and Yellow tang as well as their close relative the Moorish Idol and have had no problems with them. My blue tang came down with ich but I knew it was in my system. All my fish were moved into a 75g and 29g quarentine tank and treated with copper while my 120g goes fallow for 8 weeks. The fish are now healthy.
So I also agree that disease in most species of tangs are over rated. They do need plenty of swimming room and lots of green foods to stay healthy though. And I would still recommend a bristle tooth tang such as a kole tang for eating algae although they are not as eye catching as some of the more colorful tangs. You might also want to consider an atlantic blue tang as they are colorful and excellent algae eaters but are tempermental.

I would love the coruelus(sp?) but I think those get bigger than a kole or yellow tang. Tangs remind me of discus and just like discus they don't seem to ship well but once there settle into the tank there fine. Barring Cyanide or heavy antibiotics.
