So, I am thinking about doing a 10 gallon refugium/sump sort of thing for my red sea max, but I don't really know how I would go about setting it up. I thinking I won't need my skimmer in there, since I'll be replacing the RSM skimmer with the tunze 9002 which fits in the back of the RSM, but I need it to accomodate my phosphate reactor (which should be easy enough, since it doesn't have to be inside the 10g tank).

Basically, is there anyone that could let me know how I would circulate the water? How I would get it from my tank to my refugium and vise versa, how I would get it back (would I need 2 pumps or would some sort of overflow work?) Also, I have an auto top-off that I would move to the refugium, so I need to know how the water levels in the sump would affect the ATO. Also, how would I prevent an overflow problem in the refugium if my circulation pumps stop working, or my power goes out?

I guess this simplest thing to ask is a rough sketch of what I would need to do, and a bit of an explaination of the sketch.

So, I've been letting this project sit on the sidelines for awhile since I was low on money, but now that I have the plumbing in my budget, it's time to get started. My problem is that I have never done plumbing before and I am not familiar with what I need to get this done.

What I do know is that I want a flow control for my return, so I want a T joint and ball or gate valve controlling excess water flow back into the fuge. I also want a check valve on my return so that I don't have to worry about it siphoning. I have very limited room to work with where my return/overflow fits into the aquarium. The opening I have to work with is 1.25" high and 3.25" wide. Basically, I need to use half-inch PVC, or it won't even work. Is that too small?

Any help would be appreciated. I need to get a list of materials together so that I can go pick them up and start putting it together. I also think that I want to use flex tubing for my return/overflow between my fuge connections and my pvc overflow (which I need to build still as well). I'm thinking that I probably don't need any elbow joints for the return where it goes back into the tank unless the flex tubing isn't quite flexible enough.

    Hey,
Wow, that is not alot to work with. 1.25" high and 3.25, is that the space you have for a HOB overflow or what is this space for ?

I missed what size this tank is ? 10g is going to be tight to fit all the plumbing, pumps, ect. Not to mention being a sump and fuge.

    \Cheers

Are you using the chiller knock out hole to run your lines. Good luck with this project. As a fellow RSM owner I will be keeping tabs on this thread.

    Yes, that is my intentions.

As for the other question, my display is 34 gallons and my fuge is 10 gallons.

Here is a diagram of the back wet/dry portion of the RSM:

The portion labelled "5" is the opening I am referring to.

Here's a better picture, since that one is hard to see. This is my current setup. Note that the vinyl tubes are in/out lines for a phosphate reactor that I have hanging off the back, and a 3rd for the ATO. Also note that that stuff will be moved down to the refugium once it's set up.
