The folks on here are great, so I know someone has an answer for you. The advice on the size is warranted, but don't let that discourage you from trying.

Definately dont let anyone talk you out of it. I have a 2.5 gallon running completely on the berlin system that I only see once a week if that. Its never been a problem. Has a damsel in it and some mushrooms. I would stick to one fish. They are so small that terrirory can become a major issue.

i'm picking up the 3.5 picotope this week
if you order it from their website, it comes with the upgraded bulb and i think it's cheaper then the site you had it

i'm going to wc it every other day w/a cup of water from the 150 we have going

Thats the way to go. Just scoop some water often from your larger more stable system and all should be good.

I actually got a 1gal with light and filter (new in box) for $5, it's been up 3 days now. it has 2 pieces of rock in the tank, and 2 sm pieces of rubble, carbon, chaeto, a regular filter pad in the HOB filter thing. i'm going to use it to hatch out clownfish fry (maybe put a pom pom crab in there)

the 3.5 pico is going to take the hatched fry into as big as i can get them before they go into the 10 gal

if you kept up on your maintenance and it was a temporary solution, you could pull it off. If you try to keep the tank it will probably fail over time

All I can picture is a betta in one of those little cups. Sounds like fun doesn't it. I would just do the shrimp and zoas if you try it. No fish. But thats my 2 cents.
