So as many of you may already know I purchased 2 mp10w recently. My current reef tank is my first adventure into saltwater and the first year I bought the needed items and focused the majority of my budget on corals and livestock. I decided to focus this next year on upgrading equipment and planning for a future upgrade. My next tank will either be a 72gal bowfront or a standard 4ft 120gal so a lot of the equipment I am buying now I want to be able to use on my future reef.

I have upgraded my powerheads already from 1 Hydora Koralia 750 and 2 425s to 2 mp10w and 1 425. I am tempted to add a third mp10 to get rid of my Koralias all together but am not sure if that would be a waste of cash. Would the 3 mp10s transfer and create adequate flow in a 72bow or 120gal or would they need to be upgraded to an mp40?

Are they mp10Wes? if they are and you have them on both ends of a 75gal they should be adequate if you have them synced wirelessly.

    You'd really want 40's on a 120 with SPS.

They are both mp10w and I have them in antisync reefcrest mode on my 46gal bowfront. I have them both on the back wall in the upper corners down enough to prevent the air funnel. Works really well but I also have a Hydor Koralia 420 nanos backwall halfway down in the middle pointing up at my stylophora that LOVES high high flow. I hate seeing the cord and was thinking of replacing it with a third mp10w that I would run as another slave but with separate max flow keeping it turned down lower than the other 2. It would kind of be a waste on my current tank I think since the other 2 provide GREAT flow and it would be basically to ensure good flow behind rockwork and to a few sps but if I would be able to run all 3 mp10w on a tank as large as a 120gal without needing to upgrade an an mp40 I would go ahead and do it.

Yea for sure! Ecotech recommends a mp40 and mp10 for sufficient flow in a 75gal tank. But many people with softies and lps and a few sps say they do fine with 2 mp10s.

    But for a 120 go with mp40s.d

How about on a 72 bowfront??

I know there are limitations with glass thickness but I believe the glass on a 120 or 125gal is thin enough to run mp10s. On a 4ft tank, a 120 gal, would a single mp40w as a master and 3 mp10w as slaves be sufficient for an sps reef or would you need dual mp40s?

With the 72 2 mp10s would be fine. I have 1 on my 75 with 2 koralia 750s. the mp10 does most of the work. I am adding a second mp10 soon. And will just have the 2 mp10s on anti sync mode.

Why do you have the MP10's on the back glass? Put them on the sides, pointed at each other on anti-sync, and you can get rid of the 425 now. I agree with going to 40's on a 120. I run 2 MP10's on a 75, but I also have a large closed loop on sea swirls to create random flow. I will be upgrading to 40's at some point.

Hate the look of the pumps on the sides as does my wife. What she says goes!! When I upgrade I want to build a custom stand that will encase the back of the tank as well as some of the sides.
