You deserve some serious respect for making the progress you have given the situation. Im glad to hear that your son is doing well! I hope he continues to! The stand looks fantastic and Im sure as the rest of the build comes together the quality will match. Keep up the good work man.

I love the stand!! Looks like you have made some good progress.. in the end slow and steady wins the race!

I'm in pretty much the same boat. Just stopped in my tracks for now waiting to figure out what I'm going to do next. And hoping to find some time soon to work on plans.

The way you are going about it is much better than taking shortcuts just to get water in the tank. More rewarding and more satisfaction in the end. Very nice job on the stand!

Yup Corailline, the most precious of all commodities! As long as I make a little progress every few weeks, it is enough. Even without the beautiful things we have in our tanks, for me at least, even the process of planning and putting one together is relaxing.

Thank you Norg! Yes, he is doing very well. He has what is called hemiparesis as a result of a stroke before he was born, and developed severe epilepsy as a result. It was the hardest, best, and worst year of my life. But he is starting to talk now, and is close to walking--which we had been told that they didn't think he would ever be able to do either of those things. Amazing. His laugh is the most wonderful sound in the world!

I hope you are right about the rest of the build too :). Wish I lived up in Wis to come see your set-up man. It reminds me a bit of Jason Fox's "lair" with all the tanks you have running.

Thank you ExactlyBob! I went through several coats of paint and sanding, but I am pleased with the final result. The pictures don't do the finish justice, but I am very pleased. And, I think it will look nice without detracting from the beauty I hope to house in it, and hopefully will complement it. Also, yeah I'm trying to get good equipment, even if I gotta save up for some pieces. In the end I think it will be worth the extra investment. I am antsy to put it to good use though too ;)

Grim my friend! I must say, I miss seeing your updates, but I know you will have some new and interesting tank up again once you get settled in Sin City. I can't wait to watch your decision process and see where you end up. No matter, I am sure it will be beautiful.

I hope so Cosmo! and similarly,
Cosmo and Barbianj, you are both absolutely right. It may take me a bit longer, and believe me I have been tempted more than once to just get it up and running. In the end though I know I will have much more success if I do things right the first time. Also, I really am enjoying the process of identifying challenges/possibilities and working through them.

That being said, my only fear is that I get it all set-up the way I want, and find that my aquarist skills are so rusty that I end up going through some rough struggles to get it established, etc. If so, so be it. We learn (or relearn) as we go!

Thanks again for all your thoughts and following along, my reefing peeps!

    More progress:

In the process of banishing the orange from my tank room:

    And, its all gone!

Big roadblock, out of the way.

I also cut out the framing to support the cabinet that will go above the DT, as well as the majority of the case with rabbets. I've got to do some final fitting/scribing/trimming of the pieces. Then, I will pre-finish them with the same treatment as the stands.

If I can wrap that up, and get an electrician in here, I may be able to meet my goal of having the tank wet before Christmas.

The only last decision point is do I go through all the stuff to try and plumb this into an existing drain? That would mean dry wall, the works. I will put it this way, ideally I would totally do this, but I am just getting too antsy. And really, I could live with draining water changes into a bucket. We will see, and while this is always subject to change, right now I am feeling like skipping the hard plumbing.

Thanks for tagging along as always and hope you all are well!

Wow Thor, this is coming along nice. You have some definite woodworking skills.

Is the drain something you can do at a later time or is it a now or never proposition?

Good question elwolfe. I suppose I could plump the tank underneath for a drain and cap it, and then when I have time to get to the stuff in the walls it will be there. That just might be the way to go...

    Nice thought...
