I was shopping around for a return pump for my 37 gal and the MD3 caught my eye. At
350 gph and a 10.5' head it sounds good. My question deals with throttling back the pump, how this is done, and the rate of turnover I should be trying to achieve? Im also not sure because I found a MD5 for the same price. Is the mag5 too big for my tank? or could it be throttled back enough? Thanks for any help!

To adjust your flow, add a ball valve to the return line.

Between 5x the DT volume and 10x the sump volume provides the best filtration. You'll need powerheads for additional flow in the DT. Some aim their return at the surface and don't count it as flow at all.

Personally, I would stay with the MD3. It's more than enough.

Thank you mr bill! I will hopefully be getting my sump up and running in the next few weeks.
