I am curious if there is any adverse effect to throttling back a external return pump with a ball valve without providing the water somewhere else to go? Will this increased load burn up up the pump?

I apologize, I found a owners manual online that says it's okay to do.

I forget who told me, Matt Rogers or AZdesertrat but its actually better on the pump. To not always have it running at full capacity. I will look for the thread.

Everything you attach to a pump "throttles" it. There is not one single thing about throttling a pump.

There is a point that you stop flow completely, and that is not good. Water cools the pump. So long term, you want to allow a small amount of flow just to cool it. Other than that, throttle away.

The amount of water moved, determines the amount of power used. Throttling a pump, saves power. There is no point moving water for the sake of moving water... at least between sump and display tank.

Do not throttle the suction side... that is a whole other discussion. It allows cavitation which does hurt the pump. HINT: a dirty clogged suction filter is throttling the suction. If you are not going to keep it clean, take it off.
