I have my return going through glass and to keep it from sucking out tank in outage Just drill small hole under elbow an make sure that part is out of water. But over the top works just fine also.

how far it sticks out of tank is only like one inch. this is just enough to make sure it can break any suction

it all depends on how much work you do. I would go through the glass if you could. but in that case you are going to want use a quality check valve, i am going to use two on my next tank. just in case on fails.

are your holes drilled in the bottom of the tank, because im not sure i wanna risk drilling the bottom? im not sure the brand and if the bottom is tempered or not as it is a second hand tank. im drilling the back glass for the overflow and figured while im drilling for that i mine as well drill for the returns if its worth it. just not sure if its actually worth it and where to do it and how to stop a siphon from draining my tank to much.

to RemickJ do the check valves work good at stopping the siphon?
