Yes, true to a point, but, what the fuge does, supposidly, is catch a small percent of the raw water coming from the tank, we can all agree on that. Then, the junk that is collected in the fuge useually, or, is supposed to, stay in there and settle to decompse, get eaten etc. What happens then is clean water coes out of the overflow. Now, if the gunk from the skimmer would stay in there, then.... Of course things dont always work out in real life like on paper. Like my grandfather used to say.. If frogs had wings, they wouldnt bump thier asses going from lilly pad to lilly pad. You will find in my post, right or wrong, I like to question things for multipule reasons. Sometimes to try to build a better mouse trap, sometimes to just question if the world is flat or not (look at all the arguments there). Does not mean I think I am right or wrong, I just like to think outside the box, like tang put it and challenge things a little. Life is too boring following sheep around (a little harshly put, you all are not sheep), but, i admit, it would suck to kill my $100 coral too, god forbid the whole tank lol.

sik i understand your idea and i might work if you poured it in to a completely seperate plant only aquarium. waited a year and then put the water back in your other tank. but it is simply inefficient to try to process that waste. you might beable to not skim at all if your 100 gal(just a example) tank was connected to a refugium the size of 2 tractor trailers that was full of macro algae. you see in nature the ratio of fish to chemical processing organisms is hugely different. it is just to costly to try to reproduce that and no body wants to look at a 500 gallon tank with one blue damsel in it.

While i would agree not putting the drain from fuge to ( say filtration ) area ,
naturally ya wouldint want to just filter every thing out the fuge is there for.

But letting the fuge drain directly into the sump area by which the main return pump can pick up and return it to the main tank isint a good idea ?

The only reason i can think of that you would not wish to do that , is that your worried the pump it's self will destroy / kill off those important pods, etc?

naturaly i could understand if the pump were to kill off every thing that went thrue the impeller blades ,
But when ya take a good look at most impeller blades and the housings ?
( Quite the large space in comparison to the size of a few pods )

I dont think you would notice that much of an loss or increase either way, if ya just ran the drain over to the sump side where the return pump picks up and continues back into the main display tank.

When most peeps are restricted to a cabinent and their sump fuges are directly below the main display and do not have the room to say "" put their fuge outside and above main display and let it drain back with no pumps between them ?

Thinking outside the box is great but doing this I would think kinda redundant and pointless considering if laid out as most do ( as i described ) arint having any shortage of pod,etc growth.

Actually it dont. Skimmers also pull out iodine. Over time, the iodine will make the soil unusable.

    +1 on that!

Seeing as how I am a meat and potatoes kind of guy, that works for me. Besides, that actually why I ask such questions, gives me stuff to chew on. Filet mignon is the best, but, how many times can you chew on that until you want to try something you never thought of ;D

Not sure where you got that from as our fuge water goes directly into the sump which is then returned to the main tank.

I would assume he is thinking like me that the scum from the skimmer would be at the bottom of the fuge and the top of the fuge have clean water, just like a 20% flow produces.
