So Im not sure what happened to my guy. When purchased less than a week ago he made a burrow almost immediately after being added to the tank and was very active sifting sand constantly and very skittish. The past couple days I have not seen him sift sand and he seems to be lethargic, breathing is not fast but seems a little labored. His dorsal fin was injured during netting but now there seems to be a wound as well. He does not spoke or retreat to his burrow very often anymore either.

Not sure what to do except wait and hope he pulls through. Ammonia and Nitrite both 0, Nitrate anywhere from 0-2.5 pH 8.0 alk 11.5 Ca 430 Mag 1480. Used Red Sea Pro kit for all but ammonia and nitrite (API). I do not have a QT tank and am hoping this is jsut an injury from rubbing on a rock or an attack from a hermit crab.

Well Im pretty sure he isnt going to make it just over the course of the day he has gotten much worse. Called the store there is no refund policy with SW so theres nothing they will do I guess its just a loss.

ITs official, the poor guy didnt make it came home and found him upside down in the back fo the tank. I got him out before any rotting or even any size of scavenging so hopefully no further issues

    Ahhh sorry to hear that.

Judging from the first image I do not really think you could have done anything.

Again sorry, he was a cool fish. For what it's worth, I have had a hard time keeping the larger sand sifting gobies long term.

Yea after further research I did become a bit worried about feeding and will prob not get another. Any idea what happened? It does not look like a disease or infection does it? Just worried about it being something that can spread to other things in the tank. Im not sure what cuased that wound he initially made his borrow near the acan colonies and rubbed agaisnt them could they sting him and cause the tissue death?

If you look at the link it almost looks like a Uronema.

Agreed nutrition is usually the demise of larger sand sifting gobies over the course of time. It takes a lot of flora and funa in a sand bed to meet their needs.

Never heard of Uronema Ill have to resarch that. Anyone with first hand experience? The spot started as just the torn dorsal fin and as I looked closer it looked more like an tissue injury. As the day went on it become mroe of a flap and as it got looser it was a large lesion that went all the way down to the spine. I looked at it post mortem and did not see anything moving around in the wound or any funny growths.

the first sign one will visibly see are little red blood patches on the fish . within a day or two the patchs turn into what looks like a tumor . at this point its too late to save the fish as this means it has reached the blood stream and already done damage to the vital organs ( though even at this stage the fish may still be swimming and eating ) . with my fish i have found that after one day of these signs the fish dies after the tumor has erupted .

There was never any redness or tumor apearance the wound was awlays white like freshly torn flesh. Also another article mentions the fish become faded with excessive mucous, funny t hing is he never faded his color even after death or had any signs of thick mucous production.
