Well I'm thinking about gettin a tps to pair up with my ywg, and I was curious how loud their snapping is. I've also had conflicting reports of whether or not they attack cleaner shrimp. I also have a few hermits and 2 porcelain crabs, should I be worried about them too?

I have only had mine a few days but the instant i put it in my tank and it seen my YWG goby it went to TOWN!!! digging and building for him it was and is awesome. Havent really heard him snap yet, and he doesnt really come out from under his rock to mess with my fire cleaner shrimp either.

hard to say if they will go after the other shrimps/crabs. I would say yes...good possibility. I have a pistol in my nano tank and want to move it to my display but I have heard that it is a good possibility that it will kill my two fireshrimp...so I havent done it.

I think that if you keep your pistol well fed then it will not wander too much.

As to how loud it is....it isnt as loud as my peacock mantis snap! I can definately hear it though...

Well I feed everyday and my clean up crew finishes whatever my fish don't eat, so I'm sure it'll stay fat and happy...

I never had any issues with my pistol shrimp with other shrimp. He once resided in my small tank with a large blood shrimp, several sexy shrimp and peppermint shrimp. Seemed like he was always too busy making burrows. He did snap at clams and rocks frequently but never did any damage to anything other than my scape. ::)

He just would go up to them if they where in his way and make the snapping noise. The clams could have cared less. He never did any physical damage. If a rock a is too large and in his way, he snaps. Mine is tiger pistol, but he's cool. Now if you have acans or other corals and frags in the sand that can be an issue, as they will drag anything that will fit in their burrow down the hole, snail....hermits.......

Nope they just crawl back out. His purpose for doing so is to reinforce the burrow. He tries to shore up the hole with them.

Pistol shrimp are blind, they use the goby as a forum of protection. All the goby has to do is ever so slightly raise a fin or flick the tail and the shrimp will retreat down the burrow ASAP. Usually they are always touching, be it antenna or claw. The goby gets a nice burrow out to the deal and perhaps a some protection, as some predators will flee at the sound of the snapping.
