Funny you should say that. Dusting off the generator in the morning. Last time it went for 3 weeks. No power. You don't realise how much life sucks without it. But hey it could have been worse at least my house was still intact.

If you don't wanna go all bust with a generator at very least have a dc to ac inverter. They are about $100 for one that can take about 400 watts. I know lots of fish tanks that have 1000s of dollars of coral saved by this simple $100 box. I got mine at radio shack on sale for like $80 last year. I have peace of mind cause I know I can run my pumps and lights and a smaller heater for a really long time as long as I have gas in my car.

A generator and lots of gas. People lose there freakin minds around here and gas is like solid gold. Luckily the Legislators around here finally woke up and forced the gas stations to install generators. Instead of having police directing traffic at broken stoplights they were at the gas stations stopping people from killing each other. Hopefully it won't happen this time. The last thing you need right after a storm is thousands of people on the road searching for gas. Good tip Heidi luckily my truck has a built in converter with a plug in the bed but when you lose your power for weeks this is not really feasable.

K +1 homegrown! Way to remind fellow reefers of the importance of prepairing for storms.
