I have broken 2 bulkhead nuts, have water slowly leaking from the threads on the inside of the bulkhead nut, have flooded my floor twice from algae clogged in my U-tube and stockman pipe and simply do not trust the slip x slip design of the bulkhead.

My 55 gallon is cycling and I was planning on using my HOB overflow on it, but now I am considering the following covered by a corner overflow box.

    Kevin,

This essentially what I'm currently using on my 125reef.

I also made my own 'intank overflow- surface skimming part also.
HOw are you going to seal that box in yhour tank if it's full of water?

Did you mention you had a 55? MOst of them are all tempered for some reason- be careful if you try and drill it.

Here is my thread and video about it. It's not as nice a vid as that one, but the system works awesome, no bulkheads, and has never lost siphon, even in long power outs.

If my video of it has me using the aqualifter on the upper loop- disregard that!
I took it off over 9 months ago- still never looses siphon!

Just out of curiosity, are you overtightening the nut? All they require is hand tightening, then just a tiny tweak (1/8 - 1/4 of a turn with a pair of slip-joint pliers). Could it be a cheap bulkhead? Some are definitely better than others.

Before I started running drilled tanx, I ran an HOB overflow for many years without any troubles.

The first one I did and it cracked. The second one leaks down the threads from the inside of the nut. I got the bulkhead from Eshopps.

I should have clarified. I will be moving soon. When I move, I will be upgrading to the 55. In the meantime, I am letting it cycle in my current residence so it will be ready for my SPS etc. when I move in.

When I remove the water for the move, I could seal the box then.

But yes, my 55 is tempered, unfortunately. I like the design. I was thinking about going 1 1/4" pipe, if the overflow box will fit it.

I don't know why people have so many problems with u-tube overflows. Folks have been using them for decades without issue.

...the safest solution in a hang-on overflow on your tank would be this.

Amazon.com: Eshopps AEO11010 Overflow Boxes Pf-1000 for Aquarium Tanks: Pet Supplies

Simply use only 1 u-tube instead of both.
For the drains make one durso (or a hofer gurgle buster) which will handle 100% of the normal flow. That leaves you with one full, unadulterated drain which will remain dry BUT COULD also handle 100% of the flow if need be (you simply make this "emergency" drain 1 inch higher with a piece of pvc pipe).

    Dry floors for life.

It's mainly the bulkheads and slip-slip design of it that is a problem, not the tube itself. My floor flooded because of the clog in my stockman pipe. The dual overflow would work for that issue.

But it doesn't fix the bulkhead issue I seem to be having.

I already recommended the exact same thing...so this is X2 now 8)

Do you have the gasket on the correct side? It should be on the side opposite the nut. I never saw a drip leak from either bulkhead on my PF-1000.

There is one on each side, I believe.
