As with many of you I often found myself frustrated with my skimmer (Super Reef Octopus 2000int) in my 135 gallon reef system and the fact that the slightest fluctuation in water level etc. would cause it to overflow. Also is a pain to clean.
While not trying to throw money at anything I have tried to get very reliable equipment so as to be able to trust it while traveling for business.
So I bit the bullet and bought a Bubble King 180 from Premium. While it was very expensive, here is what has made it worth it.

    1. No cone so can be easily cleaned in 5 minutes while still operating.
    2. Produces significant quantities of skimmate after 2 weeks without cleaning and with water levels in the sump fluctuating as much as an inch.
    3. Have not had to adjust once since purchase 4 months ago.
    4. You get what you pay for!

I did the same thing and I highly recommend anyone who can, buy one of,these. The build quality, the ability to disassemble and clean, the reliability, and the quiet are all amazing.

BKs are really nice, but they are not immune from physics. They too will fluctuate wildly with varying water levels. I loved mine... but for rock steady consistent performance... you need rock steady consistent water level. It's just how it is.

I agree and everyone should have a reliable ATO. That said, my BK does way better when there is variability in water level than my wife's Reef Octopus.
