I've gone through 3 heaters in the last year on my 20 gallon. I can't remember all of the brands at the moment, but I was wondering what your all's opinion was on the best brand/type. I'm tired of listening to the aquarium store employees... That, or my luck is awful!

Tank is a 20 gallon FYI. Thanks for any and all help!

Seems excessive. Ive had one specific heater for years and 0 problems. Do you get weird power surges where you live? Maybe put the heater on some sort of battery back up to safe guard it.

When you do water changes are you leaving the heater plugged in and letting it run out of water?

+1 on that possibly being a problem as well.
