So I have a 28 gal aquaeuro cube and it seems to be resting unheated at around 81-82 deg. and this is the winter in Los Angeles. Is that unsafe for my fish and corals? Should I really do a chiller? I think my girlfriend would kill me right now if I bought something else for this small tank after getting a skimmer and a UV filter.

Ehh. I would look into some fans. A chiller is overkill IMO on such a small tank...

What is your room temp, and what kind of lighting do you have?

That is the temp I prefer on my tanks. It is fine for you fish and corals. If you have air conditioning in the summer time to keep you place cooled, then you may not have an issue. You could always put a fan by it to blow over the water in the summer time to keep the temp down. This will cause more evap though.

alot of fish and corals actually prefer temps in the very low eighties, i keep my tank at 80-82 degrees, but i have heard of people keeping theirs constantly at around 84-85

On another note though, I have heard of people being successful with temps in the lower 70's as well. I think the key it stability even with temp. ;D

thats very true, i think as long as the temp doesnt fluctuate much youll be good. there are reefs in pretty chilly areas and also in areas like the red sea where the average temperature is in the eighties.

its one of those tanks with the lids that have 2 cfl bulbs and 8 leds. there are 2 fans built in already too. we do use the air a lot all summer too so im thinking that will help. thanks for the feedback
