Just to clarify, a siphon works on the water level difference not the height of the container. You can put a bucket next to the tank and siphon fill the buck up to the height of the water in the sump.

Good point. To avoid having to have your face on the floor to start the siphon you can preload the hose with water and use your thumbs to seal both ends and then put the ends in the sump and bucket.

but in a sense , that works if the hose is actually laying flat on the bottom of the bucket. hence water finding its own level. if the end of the tube was held above the rising water in the bucket , should be able to take out what you want. but i could be wrong. lol

Thanks for all the replys. My sump is on the floor and I had to get all the water out when I frist got it going and never could get a siphon going. I however do have a pump to do this. So I guess the best thing to do is get the water out and wipe all the stuff off next water change I do? As far as skimmer goes what kind will do the job for a 55gal. The sump is 20gal.

    For my 75g, I replaced my Seaclone with the Aqua C 180, in a 20g sump/fuge...

My SeaClone was modified and was still at best a marginal performer. The Aqua C 180, ran gang busters at first, (cleaning up the tank) but then backed off.... continuing to make dark skimate, but I feel that it was maintaining an ongoing, better state of "cleanliness"...
