Exactly as stated. I bought my xenia and ricordea and did not dip (xenia was prob 2 months ago and ricordea about 3 weeks) no signs of any disease and they are both doing great, growing in size and everything, so I think I am in the clear with worrying about them.

However I plan on buying a decent sized piece of either hammer or torch coral for my first lps and am not sure if I should dip them or not. The largest pieces of the hammer are recently fragged from a local reefers tank from an extremely large mother colony

Thats a hard one. I'm usually dipping my hard corals but I have heard everyone dip all their new corals.

Does dipping add any additional stress to the coral? I would assume so but I was reading about brown jelly disease from the frogspawns, hammers, etc being caused by protozoans in the water attacking damaged parts of the coral and dipping being the best method of prevention. Do these lil critters live in the everyones water or must they be introduced?

I dip everything, no matter what it is or where it comes from. It's not worth taking the chance because once it is in your tank, it is very hard to get rid of. I have had very good success with this method.

Of all the corals I've had in my tank, I have only had trouble with one and it wasn't due to dipping, but rather where I placed it in my tank.

Are all dips created equal or are some useless? Not sure what my lfs sells for dipping corals but I know they do carry something.

I can't really say for sure, as I have only ever used the Seachem stuff. I would think that as long as you choose a reliable brand and it is an iodine solution, it should work fine.

It is sorta like fish. Most of the time you'll be fine just dumping them in there. That's pretty much what I do.

If you really want to keep ANY undesirables out of your tank, you will quarantine. (I don't add fish, so don't do that)

Dips will kill some stuff, but it is useless for a lot of stuff. Monti eating nudi's, bryopsis, for example....

Unless you line up a few dips, iodine, and h2o2, and then just go down the line dipping your coral, but after that your coral will be dead too...::)
