I still can't decide to Drill my 90g tank to my 38g sump. (using glass-holes.com kit) or to just buy an overlfow.
Drilling the tank has its issues with cracking the glass, but more than that I worry about future leaking from around the bulk head.
Overflow has noise and the siphon could always break water could possible overflow then
    Any thoughts??

drilling hands down. I drill all of my tanks and wouldn't do it any other way.

Personally, with a tank that large, i'd rather drill it. A drilled tank, when done right, has the "insurance policy" factor of not having to worry about it backing up and flooding. Drilled tanks look neater because they don't show an ugly utube and they cover from top to bottom on the tank, and you have no worries about a siphon breaking.

Sure there are always possibilities of cracking glass, and leaks. But if you do it right, it should be no trouble. There are several 3reef members who have drilled 5 or more holes in their tanks with no trouble at all.

We have a HOB overflow, though. I'd love to have drilled for the comfort factor, but a high quality HOB overflow that is taken care of will serve you well.

I drilled 6 holes in the back of my 3 foot long 50 gallon with no issues. Just stay 3 inches away from any edge and its a piece of cake.

I drilled my 30 Gallon with the 700 kit from glass holes. it went very smoothly, and Im so glad I did it. The overflow make almost no noise and only gurgles when I change the amount of flow returning to the tank.. I highly recommend going this route

As long as your tank isn't tempered I would say drill it.

Drilling is preferred. If I had had the time to drill my 90g before setting it up, I would have. There are overflows out there, when set up correctly, are close, but there really is no substitute.

Great! Thanks for the great help. I am going to order my kit now.

PharmrJohn- on another thread you told me you thought that a 1500 gph drilled overflow was to much. I agree, but worried that 700 gph is not enough. The 1500 has 2 1.5" holes. If I use a ball valve on one of the holse and close it off most of the way do you think that will work to give me more flow but not to much?
I was thinking of running one 1.5" to my skimmer side / return in the middle/ and the the one close to closed to my fuge on the end overflowing back into my return?
Or would you just go with the 700 and branch off the one to the skimmer to the fuge side?

If it were me I would do the 2 inch and a half holes. Then if you want to use a smaller return pump, you can.

I think the overflow and the return pump need to be close to the same gph?
