I have read several different threads on this site and others about using a grounding probe. Some say it is a must other say it is more dangerous. What are your guys/gals opinions on the matter? I'm leaning more to using one.

I just put a grounding probe in my tank a few weeks ago because my tank is in my basement and if i was in my bare feet standing on the concrete i would get a slight shock on occasion. Wasn't horrible but was defiantly a little startling. After i put in the grounding probe i have not had a issue since and my fish tank seems very happy. This is just my experience and i am not a veteran with grounding probes either.

it is an electrical ground for your tank that allows for stray electricity in your tank to exit through your electrical socket. It basically completes the circuit and does not allow for electricity to stay in your tank. (My knowledge of it. I might be way off base, but it is the way I understand it.)

My house is relatively new (2004) and I have never had a problem with my electric wiring (everything looks on the up and up).

All you did was use a bandaid; not fix the problem. You should definitely figure out where the source of power is coming from and either replace or repair the unit. At least this is what I would do anyways 8)
