I seen a cool demonstration years ago that made a believer out of me.At a technical class I was attending, the instructor took a non grounded hairdryer and dunked it into a bucket of water, the dryer stayed running underwater but then he reached into the bucket which completed the ground fault and popped the gfci before he felt a thing.

I'm in the crowd that believes a probe can mask an issue (not disputing AZ's advise at all) where a properly wired gfci can protect your tank and your life.

Theres millions of conductive ions in saltwater and pumps, motors, etc will generate a very minute electromagnetic field, which is normal, but lets say a heater shorts out,the immediate electrical surge will trip the gfci faster than you or your tankmates would ever know by completing the ground fault and reacting in a split second.

i have never had a problem with stray electricity but I think having a ground could only help if there were a problem.

After reading a dozen threads on why or why not to use on, I ordered one for each of my tanks last night :) I already have GFCI's for each tank as well.

    A valid experimental hypothesis.
If you test it let us know your results
